What tech jobs actually pay, from the ranges companies post
October 5, 2026 · Numbers update daily from open job listings
Salary surveys ask people what they earn. This is the other side: what companies say they'll pay, in the ranges they post in their own job listings. Scout reads the open roles on more than a thousand companies' job boards every day, and 31,330 of those listings include a yearly range in US dollars.
Software engineers, by level
Level comes from the listing's title. Each range is the middle bottom and middle top of the ranges posted at that level, counting each job once even when it's listed in several cities.
Staff engineers are paid like managers
Staff engineer roles post $200k–$271k. Engineering manager roles post $203k–$270k. The two tracks pay about the same, so moving into management isn't the only way to a manager's pay.
Every kind of role, highest first
How to read these numbers
- They're posted ranges, not offers. Most offers land inside the posted range; where depends on the level and the negotiation.
- Sales roles often post on-target earnings, base plus commission, so they read higher than base pay.
- The companies are mostly tech companies and startups with public job boards, so this is tech pay, not every job.
Pay is half of it. The other half is whether you'd get the job. See which open roles you qualify for: type a role and your skills, and Scout checks every must-have. No sign-up.
