Remote work didn't disappear, but it isn't the default either. Scout reads the open roles on more than a thousand companies' own job boards every day, so these numbers come from what companies are hiring for now, not from surveys of where people work.

A little, in what companies post. The typical midpoint of posted yearly ranges is $180k for remote roles and $200k for roles in an office or hybrid. These mix every kind of work and level, so compare like with like on pay by role. Some companies also pay remote roles by where you live, so the range in a listing can change with your location.

What “remote” means in a listing

• Many remote roles are open only in certain states or countries, for payroll or tax reasons. The listing should say which.
• Some say “remote” but expect regular office days. Read the description for “in office”, “onsite” or “days per week”.
• Remote roles get more applicants, since anyone in the eligible area can apply. Apply early.
