How to find remote jobs that are actually remote

Tell a fully remote role from hybrid, remote-in-one-state and “remote for now”, and search where real remote roles are posted.

What “remote” can mean

The same word covers very different jobs. Before you apply, work out which one it is:

  • Fully remote: work from anywhere in a country (or several), no office days.
  • Remote in certain states or time zones: remote, but only if you live in the places listed, often for tax or payroll reasons.
  • Remote with travel: remote day to day, with trips to an office or customers a few times a year.
  • Hybrid: some days a week in an office. Often labeled remote by job sites that only read a checkbox.

Read the listing, not the label

Job sites often tag a role “remote” from a single field the company filled in. The listing itself is more precise: look for the location line, a list of eligible states or countries, and words like “in office”, “onsite”, “days per week” or “commutable distance” in the description.

If the location says a city and “remote”, it may mean remote within commuting distance of that city. If it lists states, check that yours is one of them before applying.

Search where companies post

Companies post their roles first, and most precisely, on their own careers pages and the job boards they run (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and others). Searching those directly gets you the company's own wording about where the job can be done, and only roles that are still open.

Scout reads those job boards every day. Filter a search for remote, and each role shows the places it's open to.

Look at who hires remotely

Some companies list nearly every role as remote; others almost never do. Starting with companies that hire remotely as a rule makes the search shorter, and means you won't be the only remote person on the team.

Expect more competition

A remote role is open to everyone in the eligible area, so more people apply. Apply early, meet the must-haves, and say plainly in your application why you work well remotely: written communication, ownership, and examples of work you shipped without being in the room.

Questions

Is a hybrid job a remote job?

No. Hybrid means some days in an office each week. A remote job has no regular office days, though it may ask for occasional travel.

Why does a remote job ask where I live?

Many remote roles are open only in certain states or countries, usually because of payroll, tax or employment law. The listing should say which places qualify.

Where can I find real remote jobs?

On companies' own job boards, where the listing states where the job can be done. Scout reads those boards daily and lets you filter for remote.
