Nearly 1 in 5 open tech roles were posted six months ago
October 5, 2026 · Numbers update daily from open job listings
Out of 61,411 open tech roles Scout reads from companies' own job boards, 10,625 were first posted more than six months ago. Some of those are real jobs that are hard to fill. Some are evergreen listings that collect applications. Some aren't really open at all.
Why old listings stay up
- The role is genuinely hard to fill, and the company is still looking.
- It's an evergreen listing: always open, to keep a pipeline of applicants for roles they hire often.
- Nobody took it down after the role was filled or the budget went away.
From the outside, you can't tell which. That's the problem: you spend the same effort applying either way.
How to spot one
- The posting date is months old, or the listing has been reposted again and again.
- No hiring manager, team or start date is named anywhere.
- The must-haves are vague enough to fit anyone, or the pay range is huge.
- You've applied before and heard nothing.
What Scout does about it
Scout shows when each role was first seen, and only shows you roles where you meet the must-haves. When you say you're interested, Scout tells the company. If it never opens the role on Scout, your interest is withdrawn after 21 days and doesn't count against you. Companies that do hire on Scout answer every candidate yes or no within 7 days.
